Rev. Dr Roy Joseph has been appointed as the Director of the Institute of Eastern Canon Law (IECL) at Vadavathoor, Kottayam, which is aggregated to the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome. Dr. Roy Joseph was appointed by Cardinal Mar George Alencherry, the head of the Syro-Malabar Church and the Chancellor of Paurastya Vidyapitham with the approval of the Dicastery for Education and Culture in Rome. He has been teaching at Paurastya Vidyapitham since 2015. Dr. Kaduppil has been a registered attorney in the Kerala High Court since 2005. He became a priest for the Eparchy of Palai in 1991 and earned a doctorate in Canon Law from the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome and Bachelor degree in law from the Gulbarga University in Karnataka. He was the former chancellor and the judicial vicar of the St Thomas Eparchy of Chicago, USA.
The new appointment comes at a time when Dr. James Thalachelloor has completed his term of office as the Director of IECL. Dr. James Thalachelloor, a priest belonging to the Eparchy of Kanjirapally, served as the Director of IECL for six years. It was in 2017 that The Canon Law department at Pausatya Vidyapitham, Vadavathoor was raised to the status of an Institute.
